I knew, when I signed up last year to do an ironman, that I wanted to have a coach. I wanted this coach because I knew that I could readily destroy myself and my race by manhandling my own training regimen. So I started asking around and quickly came up with a few coaches to talk with. After a few brief exchanges, it was clear who the most responsive and diligent candidate for the job was and in addition to that, he had a small posse of woman my age that were training for the same race. In my mind, the combination of the two, was perfect. |
The deal with having a coach is that you have to trust them. You have to have faith that what they are asking you to do, will reap rewards down the line. Sometimes that’s hard to do, especially when you know lots of (highly competitive) athletes, doing lots of things and all those things might be different than how your coach is doing it. You can choose to trust or you can drive yourself crazy wondering if they are skinning the cat the wrong way. I chose to, as I call it, drink the Welle-Aide. Needless to say, that trust paid off for me this year. After all the time and workouts and emails and discussions and races, when it was all said and done, my coach Scott Welle, deserves the highest of praise. He has made me a much smarter, savvier and wiser racer. He has made me stronger mentally. And, he has made me pretty bad-ass-mean physically. If you want specifics on how much time I have shaved off my race times this year, I can give that to you. But know this, I am A LOT faster, after training with Scott. If you are looking for a coach, contact him. He does loads of other stuff besides training crazy people like me, so check out his website (you will quickly find out he likes information–don’t be scared). After 9 months with me…he gets my stamp of approval! Thanks for the great season Welle!

I knew training for my second Ironman was going to be a challenge. I was feeling the burnout from overtraining and injuries. With the help of 2B coaching, I was confident I could overcome these challenges and have a great race. Some of my goals consisted of learning more about nutrition, improving my technique, improving on the quality of workouts vs. quantity, and having fun while being competitive. Scott helped and supported me as I achieved those goals while teaching me much more. He adapted workouts when I was struggling with injuries, provided individual attention and feedback, and was a great role model.

When I went down Ironman road two years ago, I thought nothing would ever come close to topping the incredible experience I had. Scott sent out an email during our last tough week of training and said we would all look back on this summer as "The Best of Times". I know the majority of people can never understand how getting up before the sun, swimming across Cedar Lake, biking a 100 miles and running the track can be the best of times. But we all know they are. That is what bonds us together! Having shared this experience with all of you truly made this summer the best of times for me! Scott, please accept the fact that you do play a HUGE role in the progress I have enjoyed over the past 4 years. And all the success your clients had this year. I feel like an athlete can only go so far without an amazing coach behind them. This year I feel like I was able to pull together everything you have taught me both mentally and physically. Follow the process and the results will follow. Thank you! |
It takes quite an unique and amazing group of people to make the crazy workouts we do enjoyable, fun and manageable. You are all so supportive, talented and inspirational. Damn funny too!! I look forward to all our times together!

After one sprint and one Olympic distance triathlon I felt it was time to do an Ironman. So in September 2009 I signed up for the 2010 IMWI. I am not exactly sure what I was thinking but thank God Scott Welle was my coach. He reassured me that if I trained well I would complete the distance. It is commonly known that it is really about the journey that makes the goal worthwhile. This became very evident to me this past summer. I also found that who you share the journey with is just as important. My team consistent of Scott Welle and three fantastic women; Diane, Jackie, and Mary. Scott was our coach and leader. He guided us with care and precision. He used his knowledge and skill to prepare us physically and mentally for the IMWI. Plus the greatest gift he gave us was, believe it or not it was fun. The five of us spent countless hours swimming, biking, and running together. We were there with each other sharing and supporting each other in the physical challenges of training. We were also there to encourage and motivate each other. The summer proved to be difficult at times and wonderful at other times. In the end it was ultimately rewarding. |
I learned so much this summer. These four people with their engaging spirits taught me how to have a more positive self-being. This lesson not only helped with training but was carried through to the rest of my life. This experience has taught me that life is not a passive event but a fun and exciting journey. The laughter we shared along the way just made it even more sweet. I am indebted to Scott for bringing us all together. Without him none of this would have been possible. I was completely prepared for the IMWI. I walked to the swim relaxed and confident knowing that no matter what I was given the skills and knowledge to finish. He also was the glue that held our team together. He encouraged all of us, no matter our physical abilities. This in-turn encouraged all of us to cheer and support each other. We knew that no matter what happened in any race that the team would be there at the end to celebrate our accomplishments. Finishing the IMWI was a glorious end to an amazing journey. Sharing it with these four people will be remembered for the rest of my life. I cannot wait to see where the next journey takes us. Thank you so much Scott for taking this journey with me. I truly appreciate your abilities and support. I am sure that I would not have been able to be as successful as I was at the IMWI without you as my coach. I would recommend you to anyone. (which you know I do, often unsolicited). __________________________________________________________________________________________________ |

“Scott is not for the faint hearted nor is he the right person if you don't know what your goals are, but if you have a heart for success, know where you want 2B, and are willing to pay the price to get there Scott is the perfect fitness professional for you. Scott has a great reputation working with very competitive perfomance athletes, I'm not one of these folks but none the less his approach with me is every bit as thorough, precise and tailored just for me. As with all great coaches, Scott listens to things that are stated and tunes in to things that happen between the lines, he utilizes both when making recommendations and it is this quality that marks him out as an outstanding personal trainer.”

"I had the pleasure of training with Scott Welle in Minneapolis. I have been a collegiate athlete and triathlon competitor, and therefore, have had the opportunity to train with many top trainers and coaches. With that said, Welle is one of the most knowledgeable trainers out there, as well as compassionate about his clients success. Although there were times he made me work harder than I thought possible, I knew a trainer who pushes someone beyond their limit is the type of trainer I wanted to work with. Don't choose Scott if you want a relaxing hour of chit chat. Choose Scott if you want physical and life altering changes."

"Scott Welle was my personal trainer for over a year in Minneapolis. I highly recommend him. I initially saw Scott because I was having some lower back problems and shoulder pains. Scott developed an entire series of customized workouts for me including targeted weight training and flexibility exercises. Not only have I not had any recurrences of the back or shoulder problems, but I feel great and I think it’s really helped me with my other activities like golf and hockey. The biggest benefit was having a plan to follow. I had always exercised regularly, but having a program that I could follow and having Scott tweak the program over time really helped me get to a new level."

“There are trainers and then there are trainers. And THEN there is Scott! I hired Scott as a personal trainer for some 18 months. And then have worked with him at irregular intervals since. I was in the best shape of my life at the end of those 18th months (and I don't necessarily have age working in my favor any longer!). Scott motivated me to persist, even with my travel schedule. He provides balanced and balancing workouts (argh!) with attention to core work as well as resistance training and cardio. Lunges were the worst - and the best for me! Scott's understanding of the body AND mind in a wholistic way is very evident in the way he works with clients and in the way he lives his life. I have recommended Scott to many friends. If you want to be challenged and supported (and even have some fun along the way) work with Scott! He's a great guy! And now even a friend.”

"I am writing on behalf of Scott Welle, who I trained with in Minneapolis. At the age of 49, I wanted to look "phenomenal" for my 50th birthday. I had gained the usual 10-15 pounds after 40 and wanted to lose them again forever. I asked for a trainer that would kick my butt, and boy did I get him! Scott is a dedicated trainer and looks for the best ability in the people he trains. He knows from the start what the person is physically capable of doing and continues to push them so they can achieve not great results, but excellent results. After three months of hard training and dedicated work outs, I was down one size. I was then diagnosed with breast cancer. Scott not only urged me to continue, but gave me hope that even after chemotherapy I could come back stronger than ever. Chemo kicked me, but after five months I started back to the gym once or twice a week. Scott was always there to say a kind word or check on me to see that I was ok. I am proud to say I am going to the gym one year after my diagnosis 4-5 times a week and am getting stronger every day. Scott truly cared about my recovery and health. Without his guidance and support, I may not have ventured back to the gym for some time. Scott is passionate about his work and clients and it shows. I highly recommend anyone that is serious about getting in shape or staying in shape to consult Scott as their personal trainer. They won't be disappointed!"

"I had the pleasure to work with Scott Welle for six months before his transfer from Minnesota to Colorado and I can most certainly say that Minnesota's loss is Colorado's gain. Scott offers a rare balance of technical knowledge & discipline with good natured flexibility and enthusiasm. Scott always expected me to get a lot of out of the workout but at the same time he made working hard fun. Most importantly, he was constantly looking for feedback and adapting the workouts for continued progress. He's a fine individual and a terrific coach. I recommend Scott as a trainer without reservation."

"I’ve been privileged to work with Scott Welle as my personal trainer for this past year in MN. I would recommend him to anyone who is serious about their health and fitness. Scott is technically astute, a great motivator and savvy enough to modify my program as needed on the fly, for example to refine posture and form, and to work on endurance and strength.
Scott leads by example. He keeps himself fit and he’s always upbeat. He makes it hard to complain about a tough workout when he’s just completed the Madison iron-man and then runs the Chicago marathon a month later.
I’m fifty-eight and work as an IT Project Manager responsible for multi-million dollar projects for a $1.8B manufacturing firm. I am in good health but I had stopped running, racquetball, and working out after my divorce three years ago. Scott helped me change that. I feel better, look better and have a more positive attitude.
I strongly recommend Scott as a trainer, coach and strong motivator."

"I wanted to write a quick note to thank you for helping me to begin to accomplish my fitness goals over the past few months. I am still surprised – and so incredibly happy -- how quickly you were able to identify the causes of my concerns and begin to make changes.
I had no idea that I was capable of doing the things you asked (told/forced...LOL) me to do. As challenging as the exercises were, you always made it fun. But more importantly, I always knew that I would have your complete attention and that you were always looking for ways to help me reach my goals – it was obvious from our first session that you had the knowledge and innate ability to help me do this.
I looked forward to our sessions and knew that they would always be productive. I also appreciated the time you took to explain things to me along the way so that I could make progress on my own.
I really could not have done it without you!"
